There was once a Buddhist monk who wished to teach a lesson to his students. He picked up a glass of water and asked his students, "How much does this glass weigh?" "About 8 ounces," replied his students. "Correct. And what happens if I hold up this glass for a few minutes?" "Nothing," replied his students. "Correct. And what happens if I hold it up for an hour?" "Your arm will get tired," they said. "Correct. And how about for a few hours?" "Your arm will probably start to hurt," they said. "Correct. How about the whole day?" "The pain will increase and your arm will likely become numb." "Correct. And through all of this, has the weight of the glass changed?" "No," they replied. "So where did the pain come from?" "From prolonged stress," they replied. "Exactly. And what do I need to do to resolve the pain?" "Lower the glass," they said. "Correct! The same is true of all of life's problems. Keeping them in your head for a few minutes does not hurt, but focus on them too long and you will likely begin experiencing pain. Even longer, and your mind may become numb or paralyzed, as you won't be able to do think about anything else. To resolve the pain, put the problems down." This is mindfulnessMindfulness is focusing on what we are doing with intention. Mindfulness is the discipline of keeping your mind on what’s happening, quietly and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness is simply noticing when your mind has drifted away from what you are doing and then returning it to what you are doing. However you define it, mindfulness is a worthwhile practice that can improve our and our patients' experiences. How do you define mindfulness? During the Buddha’s travels, he once arrived at a small town where his presence was anticipated by many. While the Buddha spoke to the crowd, one person began shouting at him. The Buddha did not pay attention to the shouting and instead continued speaking, which infuriated the person. This man eventually approached the Buddha and yelled, “You have no right to teach others. You’re a fake!” The crowd began to turn on the man, reacting to his anger. The Buddha intervened, addressing the crowd:...
